Shankar wins 400m hurdles

CHENNAI: P. Shankar of ONGC won the 400m hurdles on the penultimate day of the PSPB inter-Unit athletics meet.

Kumar-Suryanarayana duo wins

Kumar and V. Suryanarayana in the North-South direction and K.R. Venkataramanan and D. Vijay in the East-West emerged winners in the Madras Gymkhana Club monthly open bridge tournament.

Other positions: North-South: 2. Vimala Singaram and J. Agarwal; 3. R.V. Subramanian and Vijay S. Raghavan. East-West: 2. R. Sreekrishnan and R. Kannan; 3. T.M. Suri and R.V.S. Manian.

Hard-fought win

Chennai scored 25-18, 16-25, 25-18 win over Tirunelveli in a Group ‘D’ match for boys in the State volleyball championship Tiruchengode on Thursday.

The results: Boys: Group ‘A’: Coimbatore bt Sivagangai 25-11, 25-14, Vellore bt Thiruvallur 25-19, 28-26. Group ‘B’: Kancheepuram bt Karur 25-5, 25-9. Group ‘C’: Erode bt Thiruvarur 25-21, 25-23. Group ‘D’: Madurai bt Cuddalore 25-17, 25-21, Chennai bt Tirunelveli 25-18.

South Zone boxing

More than 150 boxers are expected to take part in the senior South Zone boxing championship at Sathyamoorthy Nagar Corporation ground, Vyasarpadi here from December 19 to 21.

The performance of the boxers here will be taken into consideration for the inter-zonal championship to be held in Pune in January 2009.
