CLARION CALL: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala releasing a souvenir at the inauguration of the 60th annual conference of the Cardiological Society of India in Chennai on Thursday. V.K. Bahl, chairman, scientific committee of the CSI and president-elect, and Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, are in the picture. CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Thursday urged cardiologists to spread awareness of the factors causing cardiac disease. At the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Cardiological Society of India, he said there was an alarming increase in cardiovascular disease, precipitated by obesity, hyper-tension and an unhealthy lifestyle. The World Health Organisation predicted that more than 50 per cent of the world’s cardiac patients would be in India by 2010, and India would be the cardiovascular disease capital of the world by 2015. In this context, he said, spreading awareness among the public was extremely important. The Governor also released the souvenir and honoured renowned cardiologists. Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam said more than 600 children had been treated as part of the State government’s initiative to provide treatment to children with heart diseases and genetic conditions. He urged cardiologists to make cardiac care affordable for all sections. V.K. Bahl, president-elect and chairman, scientific committee, said the Cardiological Society of India was established in 1948, and now had 24 branches. The theme of the conference was ‘Pearl of Cardiology-From Clinic to Cutting Edge.’ S.S. Chatterjee, president, CSI, said an epidemic of cardiac disease was waiting to happen. He commended Tamil Nadu for its excellent healthcare facilities. A.K. Khan, general secretary, CSI, presented the annual report, and M. Somasundaram, organising secretary, spoke. More than 4,000 participants, including 500 from other countries, attended the conference, organisers said.
