CHENNAI: The State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday discussed the possibility of an alliance with the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for the coming Lok Sabha election.
The party’s general secretary Prakash Karat is likely to meet the AIADMK general secretary on Friday.
Mr. Karat briefed the State Committee members about the decision of the Polit Bureau to explore the possibility of an alliance with the AIADMK as part of efforts to realise the call given by the central committee to defeat the BJP and its allies and to reject the Congress.
Positive signals
The CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan had already met Ms. Jayalalithaa in this regard. The CPI (M) had also received positive signals from the AIADMK leadership.
“DMDK not useful”
The party had earlier discussed the possibility of allying with the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) led by actor Vijayakanth.
But, senior leaders are of the view that the DMDK might not be a usefully ally and would not be able to win seats in a Lok Sabha election.
