CHENNAI: A depression that has formed over Bay of Bengal lies centred at about 1,300 km southeast of Chennai on Thursday and is likely to bring heavy rain to the city, if it moves towards the north westerly direction. Meteorological department officials said the depression is likely to intensify and move further to west north westerly direction. It would take another day to confirm whether the depression would have an impact on the State, including Chennai. The news about the depression comes even as the city is limping back to normality after torrential rainfall last week. The city received a whopping 320 mm of rainfall between November 27 and December 3 against the average rainfall of 56 mm. The rainfall experienced during this period was nearly six times more than the normal rainfall, a Meteorological official said. The rainfall recorded in Tambaram last month was three times more compared to last year. The official said that in November 2007, rain lashed Tambaram for six days and the total rainfall recorded was 113 mm. Last month, it rained for 11 days and the total rainfall was 346 mm. The Meteorological department forecasts a partly cloudy sky and a possibility of light rain in the city on Friday. Lakes FullKancheepuram officials said the showers in the past two months were sufficient to fill to capacity 30 out of the 53 lakes in the Tambaram taluk. The other lakes also maintained by the Water Resources Department were nearly 75 per cent full. Among these lakes, 12 of them are used for irrigation purposes. They include Madambakkam, Medavakkam, Tiruneermalai, Perumbakkam, Perungalathur and Mudichur. Website RevampedThe Meteorological Department has revamped its website — www.imdchennai.gov.in — and made it more user-friendly. Besides updating the weather in the city, the website also provides links to various meteorological services, forecasts and weather bulletins issued to people involved in various sectors, including agriculture and fisheries. Satellite pictures
The Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre, S. R. Ramanan, said satellite pictures of the climatic condition in the country were also being made available on the website. More features would be added in the coming weeks.
