Central funds to be sought for infrastructure projects

Chennai: The State government will seek funding under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to improve infrastructure – stormwater drains, underground sewerage and drinking water supply – in the city and its suburbs at the cost of Rs. 2,256 crore.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin here on Thursday, according to a government release. Thirteen project proposals were submitted at the meeting to be sent for the JNNURM approval.

The Chennai Corporation and the Public Works Department have submitted a proposal for flood mitigation in the city at the cost of Rs.1,538.04 crore.

The Chennai Metrowater has given a proposal to improve drinking water supply in the Alandur Municipality at the cost of Rs.47.50 crore and in the Ambattur Municipality at a cost of Rs.193.50 crore.

A sewage treatment plant with a capacity of treating 54 million litres a day had been planned at Nesapakkam at an outlay of Rs. 51.48 crore.

The Metrowater had submitted a plan for underground sewerage in the Tambaram Municipality at Rs.148.90 crore. Underground sewerage projects had also been proposed in the following town panchayats: Chitlapakkam – Rs.24.96 crore; Pallikaranai – Rs.50.55 crore; Peerkankaranai – Rs.19.55 crore; Perungudi – Rs.18.17 crore; Sembakkam – Rs.50.55 crore; Thirumazhisai – Rs.20.40 crore, Perungalathur – Rs.42.63 crore and Madambakkam – Rs.49.75 crore.

Gopal, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, Metrowater Managing Director Sunil Paliwal and Municipal Administration director Senthil Kumar participated in the meeting.
