TROUBLE: A container lorry that got stuck in the railway underpass near the Basin Bridge junction in Vyasarpadi on Thursday.

CHENNAI: A large number of office goers and school students were put to hardship after a container lorry got stuck in the railway underpass near the Basin Bridge junction in Vyasarpadi on Thursday morning throwing the rush hour traffic out of gear.

Police said the heavy vehicle that was proceeding from Basin Bridge to Erukkancheri High Road got stuck at about 3 a.m. The vehicle was removed only by 10 a.m. with assistance of the Railway Protection Force.

Traffic went haywire with one side of the underpass becoming unusable for several hours. There have been several incidents in the past when vehicles had got stuck beneath the bridge, said local residents.

The underpass is also notorious for getting inundated every monsoon. Traffic congestion is also a daily ordeal for the residents. They have been demanding that a flyover be constructed in the area. Though the government had proposed to construct a flyover above the railway underpass, little is known about its status.
