Untold hardship for residents

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: Though the monsoon stopped long back, several parts of the corporation are still struggling with the stagnant rainwater in residential areas, providing breeding ground for mosquito and spread of waterborne diseases.

Most of the empty plots and places allocated for public utility behind the Sadakkathullah Appa College are under water for the past twenty five days.

The bad odour emanating from the stagnant water with dark greenish moss, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., is intolerable.

“After the water started stagnating in our areas, invasion of mosquitoes could not be checked by any means. However, when dried neem leaves are put in the embers, the smoke with medicinal quality provides us some relief,” says a resident A. Abdul Khader.

Another serious health hazard being faced by the residents is the mixing of the stagnant water with the drinking water.

As cracks in the main and small distribution pipes carrying drinking water allow the stagnant rainwater in, drinking water supplied to several parts of Tirunelveli Corporation is muddy.

“We’ve informed the officials about the grim situation. However, they replied that efforts to pump out stagnant rainwater would be taken once the rain stops. The rain has stopped but no step has been taken to improve the situation. We expect the outbreak of serious waterborne diseases such as jaundice or typhoid in our area anytime now,” said P. Selvaraj of Balabhagya Nagar, another well-developed area close to Tirunelveli Junction.

The officials alone cannot be blamed for this situation as some influential people have made even permanent constructions on the storm water drainage and sewage channels in several parts under the Corporation.
