Phishing on the rise: CERT
Special Correspondent
About 800 vulnerabilities reported during 2007 Phishing cases spiralling among Indian banks
HYDERABAD: With cyber security coming under sharp focus, the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) of India came up with interesting facts on the growing menace. According to the Ministry of Information and Communication technology, the CERT in India had reported about 800 new electronic vulnerabilities during 2007 in the country against 24 in 2001.
The numbers of phishing cases were spiralling among Indian banks. As many as 78 cases of phishing were being reported on an average every day. Most of the phishing cases were hosted outside -- hosted in one country and registered in another.
The total number of cyber attacks, including cyber fraud and operations, were on the rise by about 50 per cent annually, with many types of attacks doubling in numbers.
Over 80 per cent of spam was going through emails. A survey conducted by the CERT and Price Waterhouse Coopers showed that 50 per cent of organisations providing services had to compromise systems in 2006 or 2007. The most disturbing fact was that there had been increase in the number of cases of cyber incidents pertaining to domain name registry. The registrars, the address, and the IP address were found to be faked.
