‘Ensure seats for senior citizens’

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The Transport Commissioner has asked senior officials of the Motor Vehicles Department to enforce his order setting apart five per cent of the seats in all stage carriages for senior citizens.

He said in a communication to the officials that there were complaints that seats were not reserved in many stage carriages especially private stage carriages.

In the stage carriages in which the seats were set apart, youngsters were found to be occupying them and refusing to vacate them for senior citizens. The conductors were not taking any steps to ensure that the senior citizens got these seats. He asked the officials to see that these seats were demarcated at the time of issue of fitness certificates itself.
