KRISHNAGIRI: As a token of goodwill and to improve their economic condition, the orchestra troups of the visually challenged will be invited to all the Government functions in Krishnagiri from now on, announced Collector V.K. Shanmugam.

He was presiding over a function to mark the International Day of Disabled Persons at the Bargur I.E.L.C. Blind School recently.

This announcement was made following the request of Krishnagiri M.L.A. Mr. T. Senguttuvan that the orchestras troupes of the visually challenged be invited to perform in all the Government functions.

He said that persons with disabilities form 10 per cent of the population in India and in Tamilnadu it is two per cent.

Awareness camps

Mr. T. Senguttuvan asked the district administration to conduct awareness camps for pregnant women to make them aware of the need to take proper medication during pregnancy to prevent children being born with disabilities.

There are about 72 boys and 42 girls studying in the school. Students study from class I to VIII at the Blind School and then attend a nearby school on a combined basis from class IX onwards, she added.
