Death of children condoled

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has expressed shock and grief at the demise of nine children in an accident that occurred at Irikkur in Kannur district. He said here on Thursday that directives had been given to those concerned to provide the best treatment to the injured children who were admitted to various hospitals in the area.

State secretary of the CPI(M) Pinarayi Vijayan described the accident as unusual and demanded stringent action against those responsible for it. He said the entire State was shaken by it. He wanted assistance to be given for the treatment of the children and financial assistance for the bereaved families. Health Minister P.K.Sreemathi also expressed deep grief at the mishap. The Minister, along with Transport Minister Mathew Thomas, rushed to Kannur immediately on learning about the mishap. Education Minister M.A. Baby said directives had been given to the Director of Public Instructions to conduct an inquiry.

“No kind words can console the grief of the loved ones of these little children, who were the promise of their families and the nation. However, we will decide on the relief measures to be taken after discussing it with the Chief Minister,” Mr. Baby said. He left for Kannur late on Thursday night.

Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala also condoled the deaths.
