TIRUNELVELI: The Khadi and Village Industries Commission has appealed to farmers to set up gobar gas units in their houses to ensure an annual savings of Rs. 4,000 in cooking gas expenditure. An official statement said the KVIC was giving a subsidy of Rs. 3,500 for Dalits, Tribes, small and marginal farmers and Rs. 2,700 for others for installing the unit costing about Rs. 12,000. Since the waste produced in the unit can be used as organic manure, it would also fulfil the fertilizer requirement of the farmers to some extent. For preparing organic manure or vermicompost, farmers can get subsidised loans from the nationalised banks. Poultry farm owners and farmers having a good number of cattle can generate power to meet their requirements. For more information they can contact KVIC, 10, Bypass Road, Madurai – 10 (Phone: 0452 – 2386792), the statement said.
