MANGALORE: Eleven-year-old Girish Koushik of Karnataka defeated Pranav Shetty of Maharashtra to emerge the sole leader, with 8.5 points, in the boys’ section at the end of the 10th round in the BSNL sub-junior chess championship here on Wednesday. Girish the current u-11 National champion won in 53 moves. On the top board, Akash of Tamil Nadu drew with second seed Debasish Das of Orissa in a 37-move game. In the girls’ section, Shalmali Gagare of Maharashtra drew with Shikha Shah of Gujarat to take the sole lead. Shalmali’s draw led to R. Bharathi of Tamil Nadu replacing her as the sole leader. Bharathi defeated Savetha, also of Tamil Nadu, in 24 moves. Corrections and Clarifications A BSNL sub-junior chess championship report "Girish, Bharathi in lead" ("Sport", Karnataka editions, December 4, 2008) incorrectly said that in the girls' section, Shalmali Gagare of Maharashtra drew with Shikha Shah of Gujarat to take the sole lead. She was placed second behind R. Bharathi of Tamil Nadu, the eventual winner, at the end of 10 rounds.
