KOZHIKODE: Akkitham Achuthan Namboodiri, who elevated Malayalam poetry from the sedate realms of sweet romanticism to grand intellectual heights, has been awarded the coveted Mathrubhumi Literary Prize. The award carries a purse of Rs.2 lakh, a plaque and a citation. The award was announced by M.P. Veerendrakumar, Managing Director, Mathrubhumi, and P.V. Chandran, the newspaper’s Managing Editor, here on Wednesday. The poetry of Akkitham was filled with compassion and a grandeur arising from a close and strong association between human consciousness and nature, the award committee headed by Punathil Kunhabdulla observed. Sethu and K. Satchithanandan were the other members of the award committee. Born at Kumaranalloor, near Kuttipuram, Akkitham’s poetic genius was shaped and influenced by Edassery, another hallowed name for lovers and students of Malayalam poetry.
