KOCHI: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala says that the three-day State conference of the Congress party, beginning here on December 14, will be a turning point in Kerala’s political history.

At a news conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Chennithala said tens of thousands of party workers would attend the conference and a rally, which would be attended by party president Sonia Gandhi.

A host of national leaders, such as Pranab Mukherjee, Rahul Gandhi, Mohsina Kidwai, A.K. Antony and Vayalar Ravi would speak at the conference. Ms. Gandhi will address the rally on December 15 evening and will speak at the meeting on the following day. Six important resolutions, on issues such as politics, economy and terrorism, will be moved at the conference which will be open for party functionaries of mandalam committees and above.

The meet will give shape to a plan of political action over the next two years against the ruling LDF government.

Senior leader Janardhan Poojary will hoist the party flag on December 11 at Kasaragod while K. Karunakaran will kick off the ‘deepasikha rally’ at Thiruvananthapuram the same day. Congress activists would carry Jawaharlal Nehru’s portrait from Ottappalam where the first meeting of the Congress party in the State was held.

The portrait will be unveiled by Thennala Balakrishna Pillai. UDF convenor P.P. Thankachan will unveil the portrait of Indira Gandhi at Kumili in Idukki district on December 12.
