Protest: Members of the Tamil Nadu Revenue Officials Association stage a demonstration in front of the Cuddalore Collectorate on Wednesday.

CUDDALORE: Members of the Tamil Nadu Revenue Officials’ Association staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday, demanding an apology from Panruti MLA T.Velmurugan for his ‘unsavoury behaviour’ towards an employee. They also warned that if the Pattali Makkal Katchi MLA did not do so, the revenue officials all over the State would join the protest. Panruti tahsildar R.Abaranji told The Hindu that the MLA used abusive language and also raised his hand to beat up his (tahsildar’s) assistant Muthuraman.

For such a rude behaviour, the MLA should express regret, Mr Abaranji said. When the assistant was handing over the cheque to him to be handed over to the MLA for disbursement to the kin of the victims of rain-related incident on Tuesday, Mr Velmurugan started scolding the assistant without any provocation. As Mr Muthuraman was a member of the association, the latter had taken up his cause.

MLA’s version

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Mr Velmurugan said though Panruti taluk was severely hit by the rain, the tahsildar had misled the Collector by stating that there was no worthwhile damage, because of misrepresentation no relief could reach the affected people in his constituency. Mr Velmurugan said the tahsildar had never informed him about the relief operation and even when he asked about it the latter addressed him in singular. The MLA questioned whether the revenue officials could abstain from work, after duly signing the register to mark their presence, and stage a demonstration in public. He said he would take this to the notice of Chief Minister and higher officials.
