TIRUCHI: Officials of all government departments should be sensitised to the hazards of child labour menace and the steps to be taken to put an end to the same, observed speakers at an awareness programme on child labour monitoring system for the government officials held in the city recently. The programme was organised by the Child Labour Elimination and Effective Rehabilitation Society (CHEERS) on the direction of the District Collector, T. Soundiah. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, M. Vijayalakshmi in her inaugural address said that the district officials of all ranks belonging to different departments should be made aware of the child labour menace and the laws enacted by the government to check the same. They should be in the know of things on whom to inform on spotting children in work places and the follow up action to be taken. The Chairperson of the District Panchayat, V. Sangeetha said that the child labour elimination programmes should be implemented from the grass root level itself. With proper and effective implementation, this menace could be eradicated. Mrs. Sangeetha said that awareness should also be created among the heads and other representatives of the local bodies too to achieve success in these attempts. In this connection, she said that the District Panchayat was explaining the role of the local bodies in achieving child labour free society. The Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, S. Rathnam explained the rights of the children as enshrined in the Constitution and how the same are being abused by vested interests. He detailed achievements of special squads formed by the Labour Welfare Department. Additional Superintendent of Police Nagarajan, the Project Director of CHEERS K. Manju, Block Resource Coordinator of Continuing Education Programme R. Paneerselvam and others spoke. A similar programme was held for the benefit of the heads and representatives of local bodies subsequently.
