KOCHI: The facilities marked out for the physically challenged in transportation and public places, as envisaged in the Disability Act 1995, are yet to be in place in the city as elsewhere in the State. A physically challenged employee at the Government Press in Kakkanad said there are no comfort stations in public places or bus stands that can be used by people like him. Even in railway stations, facilities exist only on paper, he said. The Railways has set up ramps and toilets for them, but often the ramp is blocked with goods and the toilet is always under lock, he alleged. K. Sasikumar, another physically challenged government employee, had been writing to authorities pointing out the lack of facilities in public spaces. The authorities, he said, do write back, but nothing happens after that. The country with over 6 crore physically challenged people still has not been able to implement the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act 1995 in its letter and spirit. In fact, there is little awareness about these issues among the public.
