SPREADING MESSAGE: Students getting ready to depict the roles of earth, sky and the demon of pollution as part of a presentation on environment at the district-level science fair in Vijayawada on Tuesday.

VIJAYAWADA: Underscoring the need for updating the curriculum on a par with the emerging changes at global level, Krishna district Collector N. Sridhar on Tuesday said children would be able to face competition only when they had adequate knowledge of the latest in science and technology.

Inaugurating the 36th district-level science exhibition at Bishop Grassi High School here, Mr. Sridhar addressed the teachers and students from different schools across the district.

He said children should know about the nature, resources, food chain, natural calamities and the impact of environmental pollution. “They should also know the steps to be taken to protect ourselves from calamities,” he said.

Stating that self-confidence would be the key for the success of children, Mr. Sridhar said that the country would develop a lot in the future, as it has vast human resources. “We have to make children aware of the developments at global level.

Science exhibition is the right platform to teach children about the developments in the fields of science and technology,” he said.

Kankipadu MLA Devineni Rajasekhar (Nehru) wanted children to know that environment should not be spoiled in the process of achieving economic development. Highlighting the role of teachers, he said teachers played an important role in making children decide on their future goals.

Focus on research

MLC K.S. Lakshmana Rao observed that students of present generation were not showing any interest in taking up research in the field of science and technology, but were keen on getting a job in a corporate firm after completing their degree in engineering course.

In-charge District Educational Officer V. Premanandam said as many as 265 exhibits were put on display in the exhibition.
