Attacked army jawan succumbs to injuries

BHUBANESWAR: An instant justice mob lynched an army jawan, who had attacked fellow passengers, in Howrah-Chennai train (Coromandel Express) on the outskirts of the capital city on Monday .

The jawan who was beaten up on Monday succumbed to the injuries at SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack on Tuesday. Though exact identity of the jawan is yet to be ascertained, he is believed to be from 11 Gorkha Regiment. He was coming from Tinsukia of Assam and was on his way to Chennai. According to Government Railway Police (GRP), an altercation took place between a few passengers and the jawan over an issue soon after the Coromandel Express left Bhubaneswar station.

In a fit of rage, the jawan attacked fellow passengers with a sharpened weapon and in the process at least six of them sustained injuries. Since most of the injured persons belonged to Khurda, they contacted other villagers over cell-phones describing the incident. At Durga Bazar area, just before the Khurda Road Station, somebody pulled the chain and people soon surrounded the train. They looked for the jawan to teach a lesson on the spot. However, the jawan took shelter in other bogies in a desperate attempt to escape.

Meanwhile, on being informed a team of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP reached the spot. By that time the mob was almost uncontrollable. Although the jawan locked the bogey from inside, people showed no mercy. They ordered other passengers to come out and started beating the jawan black and blue. The mob did not end there and took the victim on to railway track where more people joined the beating. The RPF and GRP tried to rescue the jawan but in vain. In a critical condition, the jawan was first admitted in Jatni Hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital at Cuttack.

GRP Superintendent of Police Niranjan Swain said security personnel tried their best to disperse the mob and later brought the jawan to hospital. The mob had also cut down the hose pipe of train for which the train was detained there for more than three hours.
