Creation of separate Ministry for communal harmony mooted

MADURAI: The head of Madurai Adheenam, Arunagirinatha Gnanasambanda Desikar, has mooted the creation of an exclusive ministry for communal harmony at the Centre and States to fight extremism and terrorism.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that such a ministry, with a Minister holding Cabinet rank, was essential in the context of growing threat of extremism.

The person holding the post must possess a good knowledge of all religions and foster respect for them.

This ministry must be created at the Centre and all States. The Minister concerned should visit areas where there were reports of caste or communal tension and hold talks with people for on-the-spot resolution of issues. The Minister in charge of communal harmony in Tamil Nadu should not have any link with Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and they should function as different entities. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, he said, must visit New Delhi to impress upon the Centre the need to have an exclusive ministry for communal harmony.
