Vignesh too good for qualifier Bhishma Desai
Fighting win for Rohan Gide

NEW DELHI: Top-seeded V.M. Ranjeet emphasised his all-round game and a robust approach with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over the former national sub-junior champion Prateek Bhambri in the pre-quarterfinals of the DSCL National men’s tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Tuesday.

Kamala Kannan advances

Another player in good form, P.C. Vignesh dismissed qualifier Bhishma Desai for the loss of one game, but the seventh-seeded Kamala Kannan had to work considerable sweat in getting past Mithun Murali in the second set tie-break.

At 4-4 in the second set tie-break, Mithun could have fancied his chances of forcing the issue into the third set, but a feeble backhand followed by two poor returns on the next three points put paid to his hopes.

Of course, Kamala Kannan played a matching game to his strong physique, in breaking the resistance of the wiry opponent.

The other four pre-quarterfinals would be played on Wednesday.

There was some excitement in the doubles as well, as Yannick Nelord and Saurav Sukul salvaged some pride by beating the second-seeded Kamala Kannan and Sriram Balaji in the super tie-break.

Equally impressive was the fighting victory by Rohan Gide and Vijayant Malik against qualifiers Sandeep Kirtane and Akash Wagh in the match tie-break.
