Chinese Foreign Minister in Kathmandu

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: In the first high-level official visit of the government of China, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi arrived in Kathmandu on Tuesday. Among other issues, Mr. Yang will discuss the Tibetan refugees’ issue, matters related to Kalapani on which India and Nepal have different takes and economic and technical cooperation.

He, however, did not respond to reporters’ questions upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport.

Mr. Yang is here accepting Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav’s invitation. Yadav’s Foreign affairs adviser Shyamananda Suman said on Tuesday the government of China is increasing its financial assistance to Nepal. However, he said it be known only after Mr. Yang’s meeting with his Nepali counterpart Upendra Yadav on Wednesday.

The Chinese Foreign Minister will also hold talks with President Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Reports also say the visit is preparatory for Mr. Dahal’s second visit to China. Mr. Dahal had made his first international visit to China soon after becoming Prime Minister to attend the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
