Irulas not to hunt endangered species
Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM: The Irulas of Villupuram, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai districts have decided not to hunt endangered species such as monitor lizards, rabbits, snakes and mongoose.
The general body of the Pazhangudi Irular Padhukappu Sangham that met here on Sunday, with its vice-president U. Malar in the chair, adopted a resolution.
It said that the Wild Life (Protection) Act 1972 had prevented hunting of these species and prescribed penal action for even harassing them.
Therefore, the Irulas had decided not to hunt such species any more.
In another resolution, the association said that for the past two years, Villupuram district administration had not issued community certificates to 1,000 Irulas. This had affected higher education prospects of the Irulas and also acted as a stumbling block in their becoming members of government-formed tribal welfare board.
It called upon the Villupuram Collector to make arrangement for speedy distribution of the certificates.
In yet another resolution, the association urged the law-enforcing authorities to act promptly on the complaints lodged by the Irulas, who were subjected to atrocities.
It urged the government to construct cluster houses for the Irulas, who were mostly living near water sources and in peripheral areas.
