It was to focus attention on their demands. Listing the demands, the General Secretary of the Association C.Sekar said that the services of the contract workers should be regularised and the system of appointing persons on a contract basis should be given up. Persons who have studied only up to seventh standard should be taken as conservancy staff. On a seniority basis the conservancy workers should be promoted. Stating that the benefits of the provident fund and pension schemes should be extended to all the workers, he said that free house site pattas should be given to all the conservancy workers. The municipality should construct houses for the houseless conservancy workers. He said that all the conservancy workers should be given weekly holidays and the old and infirm workers should be given alternative jobs. Before appointing new workers the association should be consulted. Suitable clothes should be provided to those engaged in cleaning the drains. Two members of the association should be permitted to attend the periodical meetings of the municipal council. Claiming that the demands of the workers had not been considered despite repeated representations, he said that until they were met a series of demonstrations would be organised. Among those who participated were members of the Nilgiris district CITU.
