Raichur
Raichur: Preliminary arrangements are being made for the byelection to the Legislative Assembly from Deodurga constituency in Raichur on December 27. The seat fell vacant after K. Shivangouda Naik, who was elected from the constituency as the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate, resigned from the Assembly and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Adoni Syed Saleem told presspersons here on Tuesday that the election notification would be issued by the Election Commission on Wednesday. The last date for receiving nomination papers is December 10. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on December 11, and the last date for withdrawal of papers is December 13. Counting of votes will be held on December 30 at the district headquarters. Mr. Saleem said the district election cell had completed all preliminary preparations such as identification of polling booths, polling staff and security arrangements. Assistant Commissioner of the Raichur Revenue subdivision M. Mallappa had been appointed Returning Officer and tahsildar Ramappa would be the Assistant Returning Officer. He said that the model code of conduct had come into force on November 23 throughout the district. He said the voters’ list was the same as the final list published in January. Deodurga constituency comprised 187 villages and 18 wards of Deodurga Town Panchayat. With recent changes to the list, 30,000 new voters had been added to it. The constituency had 1,62,796 voters — 81,167 men and 81,629 women — of which 1,01,277 had been issued photo identity cards and arrangements had been made to issue the cards to the rest before December 10. Mr. Saleem said that there would be 195 polling stations in the constituency. Of them, 55 stations had been identified as hypersensitive and 80 as sensitive. A meeting with the Superintendent of Police would be held on December 10 to review security arrangements. He said that electronic voting machines would be used and Bharat Electronics Ltd. had been given the responsibility of checking the machines before polling. M.N. Halalli, Joint Director of the District Industries Centre, and Halagappa, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry, were appointed as nodal officers. Sector officials had been appointed in all 22 divisions of the constituency .
