Villagers cry foul over youth’s death

Mathura: People of a village here gheraoed a police station and pelted stones at a police party over the death of a youth, who, they alleged, died in police custody.

They said that Mahendra of Hardeoganj died on Monday night after police resorted to third degree measures on him. Refuting the charges, the police said he had died in a road accident and the body was shifted to a hospital.

When Additional SP Govind Agrawal reached the spot and persuaded them to withdraw, villagers hurled stones damaging the police jeep and furniture.

The suspicion thickened after the body was shifted to a hospital “hurriedly”, without informing the parents. The police had obtained the driving licence of the deceased.

They demanded that a case be registered against SHO Devi Ram Ghehlot. --PTI
