Tuticorin: Tuticorin District Cricket Association at SPIC Nagar, conducted its third intra-district school trophy cricket tournament for 2008. The tournament was conducted on a knock out basis of 20 – over a side. In order to promote the game and sporting spirit, no entry fee was collected and balls were distributed free of cost. About 20 schools participated, S.S. Manivanan, Secretary, TDCA, said. A cash award of Rs. 10, 000 was given to the winners while Rs. 5, 000 was given to the runner–up and a rolling trophy and permanent trophy awards were given. Best batsman, bowler, fielder and promising youngster, Man of the Match and Tournament awards were adjudged and prizes were given. The final match of the tournament was played recently between St. Antony Higher Secondary School, Palayalayal and Samy Ayya Nadar Higher Secondary School, Nagalapuram. St. Antony Higher Secondary School, was declared winner of the tournament and Samy Ayya Nadar Higher Secondary School, Nagalapuram was declared runners. At the prize distribution ceremony, R. Muthu Manoharan, President of TDCA, said that there were talented youngsters in rural pockets of the district. It is high time that sporting acumen of players should be identified in the rural areas for often they outshone the players in the city, he pointed. The TDCA provides adequate training to all cricket lovers irrespective of area limits, he added. He said that the players with good performance could be taken to represent the state level, he said. Collector R. Palaniyandi, gave away the awards to players for their outstanding performances in the finals. Best Bowler – M. Poomariappan, Sami Ayya Nadar HSS, Nagalapuram, Best Batsman – S. Sudakar, Best Fielder – L. Washington, St. Antony HSS, Palayakayal, Promising Youngster – S. Nagarajan, Sami Ayya Nadar HSS, Nagalapuram, Man of the Tournament – M. Mariselvam.
