MADURAI: District Collector P. Seetharaman on Tuesday carried out a joint inspection of the Mariamman Teppakulam here with officials from other departments. The inspection was to prepare proposals for tourism-related development work around the tank. The Collector was accompanied by Darez Ahmed, Additional Collector (Development) and Project Officer, District Rural Development Authority (DRDA), and officials from Tourism Department, Madurai Corporation, Public Works Department and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. Speaking to journalists after the inspection, Mr. Seetharaman said that work worth Rs. 5 crore would be proposed under the ‘Product, Infrastructure and Destination Development’ scheme of the Central government. “I have asked the three departments to formulate proposals,” he said. The PWD had been asked to give estimates regarding how the soil at the tank bottom could be replaced by clay. Also, as the water from the Vaigai being brought to the tank was now not pure, the PWD had been asked to suggest a filtration process so that the water could be purified to some extent. The Corporation, he said, had been asked to consider removing the sand on the streets around the tank and install paver blocks besides removing the steel chairs and going for granite benches. Mr. Seetharaman said construction would commence by March 2009.
