STEPPING OUT: Tamil Nadu’s Abhinav Mukund made good use of his feet against the Andhra spinners. NEW DELHI: After struggling with the bat, Railways was trying to cope with a few fitness problems as Uttar Pradesh slowly tightened the noose on the penultimate day of their Ranji Trophy Super League match at the Karnail Singh Stadium here on Monday. Veteran Yere Goud’s stubborn unbeaten 78 took Railways to a modest 200, which was enough to avoid follow-on. With the cushion of 146 runs advantage in the first innings, U.P scored a handy 118 for four in its second essay and was enjoying a healthy lead of 264 runs at stumps. ResistanceGoud and Mahesh Rawat provided some resistance in the morning. Before the departure of Rawat (39, 104 balls, 5x4s), who came out to play despite running high fever, the two had stood strong in an important stand of 72 runs for the sixth wicket. Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla found his touch to polish the tail for his 10th first class five-wicket haul as Goud kept on looking at the other end. The seasoned pro consumed 231 balls and struck 11 boundaries in his knock. While fielding for the second time, Railways struggled as well. Wicketkeeper Rawat took a break to see the doctor, leaving the glovework to Milind Tamhane. Kulamani Parida, nursing a sore knee, put up a brave effort to be on the field and claim two wickets. The home team missed chances and gave away too many byes (22) to make matters worse. A jarring note for Railways was Murali Kartik being summoned by Match Referee K. Pradeep for showing dissent after being given out. Tanmay Srivastava worked hard for his unbeaten half-century to help Uttar Pradesh gain the upper hand.
