Churchill posts win

KOLKATA: An own goal by East Bengal defender Mehrajuddin Wadoo midway through the second session helped Churchill Brothers post a 2-1 win in their 11th round match of the I-League at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Monday.

Earlier, it was an own goal by Churchill’s Chandam Chitrasen that helped East Bengal take the lead in the second minute.

However, Ogba Kalu equalised for the visitor in the first session.

East Bengal, with its third successive loss, remained in the seventh spot with 12 points. Churchill was third with 20 from 11 outings.

Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya made amends for his lapse in the second minute, when he let in a back pass from Chitrasen, by making some brilliant saves.

Churchill’s equaliser came off Odafe’s measured free-kick that released Kalu inside the East Bengal box.

The latter had no problem in placing his header home. — Principal Correspondent
