Pensioners of the State government have been getting a medical allowance of only Rs. 50 a month for past 13 years. It has become inadequate since consultation fee has been climbing over the years. But pensioners of the Central government have been getting Rs.100 since December, 1997. It is hoped that the State government will increase the medical allowance to Rs. 100 to its pensioners also. V. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai Electricity bill paymentA reader has stated in the Reader’s Mail column dated November 25, 2008 that the Telecom Department is reminding its consumers about the due date of payment but not the Tamil Nadu Eelectricity Board (TNEB). The TNEB has to pay a huge amount for phone calls to remind the consumers about the payment date. This requires manpower also. The TNEB is already incurring loss due to free supply to agriculturalists, weavers and hut dwellers. There is also shortage of manpower. So this is not feasible. The Telecom Department is reminding its consumers because it need not pay for the calls made (automated pre-recorded service). In current consumption charge card (meter reading), details of due date of payment and disconnection due (15 days are given for payment) are printed. Essential services such as streetlights, water supply are not disconnected. If disconnected, the public will suffer. R. Gopalakrishnan, Madurai Bone-rattling roadThe arterial road leading to Post and Telegraphy Nagar from the from the Income Tax office is in a very bad shape. Underground drainage work has robbed the smooth surface of the pucca road. Though the drainage pipes have been laid, the road remains unrepaired, giving a bone rattling experience to drivers and riders. Because of the uneven road surface, vehicles slow down and pile one after another leading to traffic snarl during peak hours. Will the authorities re-lay the road immediately and end the misery of vehicle users? B. N. Raja Mohamed, Madurai
