THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The heavens seemed to smile down on earthlings on Monday as a happy conjunction of planets and the moon drew a celestial ‘smiley.’ Sky-watchers across the world had a rare treat as Venus, Jupiter and the moon appeared in conjunction soon after sunset on Monday evening. Conjunction is the coming together of celestial objects in the sky as seen by an observer on earth. On Monday evening, sky-watchers across the world spotted a bright Jupiter and a brighter Venus near the crescent moon. According to the Planetary Society of India, Venus and Jupiter come in the line of sight during their orbit around the sun in such a way that they appear to be near each other as seen from Earth. According to the National Geographic news, planetary conjunctions involving such close encounter between Venus and Jupiter are relatively rare events. The web site also says that the next visible conjunction would be on the evening of March 14, 2012.
