Girish among leaders despite loss

MANGALORE: The overnight sole leader Karnataka’s Girish Koushik was halted in his tracks in the BSNL under-13 sub-junior National chess championship at the Subrmanaya Hall here on Monday.

The under-13 National champion lost to Debasish Das of West Bengal in the seventh round.

Both the players are now in the lead with six points. They share the position with Aditya Udeshi of Maharastra and Utkal Ranjan Sahoo of Orissa.

Overnight leader in the girls’ section Shalmali Gagare drew her game against R. Bharathi of Tamil Nadu.

Shalmali of Maharastra with six points enjoys a slender half-a-point lead over her nearest rivals R. Bharathi of Tamil Nadu, Rucha Pujari of Maharashtra and Pallabhi Roy of West Bengal.
