Corrections and clarifications

Mr. P. Chidambaram was made Minister of State for Internal Security in the Home Ministry (Rajiv Gandhi Cabinet) in October 1986, and not in 1984 as stated in the sixth paragraph of a report “Patil quits, Chidambaram takes charge of Home” (December 1, 2008, page 1).

A sentence in the fourth paragraph of a report “Pakistan now holds the key to probe: investigators” (December 1, 2008) was “After encountering Indian Coast Guard vessels on February 19, the [10-man Lashkar fidayeen team] hijacked the Kuber, a Porbandar-based fishing boat that had been blown off course.” It should have been November 19.

A report “[President] Pratibha curtails Indonesia tour, to visit Mumbai” (November 30, 2008) gave the designation of Christy Fernandez as the President’s press secretary. Dr. Christy Fernandez (1973 batch of the IAS Gujarat cadre) is the Secretary to the President.

A report “7 policemen killed in Chhattisgarh blast” (November 29, 2008) said that seven policemen were killed when suspected Maoists guerrillas blasted a bridge near Mardapal, about a hundred kilometres from Jagdalpur district headquarters in southern Chhattisgarh, while a PTI report “7 policemen killed in landmine blast” (“Briefly”, November 29, 2008, page 1) said that the blast was in Bastar district of Chaattisgarh. The detail in the PTI report is right. It was at Bastar, about 100 km from Jagdalpur which is the headquarters of Bastar district.

The tenth paragraph of a report “Endgame in Mumbai, death toll could be 200” (November 29, 2008, page 1) was “Maharashtra Director-General of Police A.N. Roy said 155 civilians have so far died in the terror attacks which began on Friday.” It should have been Wednesday.

The author note at the end of an article “A monument to love – Mumbai’s Taj Mahal” (Op-Ed, November 29, 2008) said Russi M. Lala lives near the Taj Mahal and even closer to Nariman House. It should have been the Taj Mahal hotel!
