Nagercoil: Uneasy calm prevailed at the Anna bus stand and in front of the transport depot at Ranithottam on Monday after the non-operation of more than 100 buses for more than two hours. According to sources, the employees of 11 depots in different parts of the district, including Ranithottam – 1,2 and 3, Kuzuthurai, Monday Market, etc., used to receive their salaries on the first day of every month. But, this month the management announced that salary would be given to drivers and conductors on December 1 and the salary to the rest on December 5 and 9 respectively owing to insufficient funds. Angered over this, the employees staged a demonstration in front of the Ranithottam depot demanding to issue salary to all the employees on December 1 itself. Owing to this more than 100 buses were not operated from the depot for more than two hours on Monday afternoon. Passengers were stranded for more than two hours at the Anna bus stand as the crew drivers and the conductor resorted to a flash strike in different parts of the district to urge the management to issue salary to them. Passengers protestIrked by this, the passengers squatted on the road to urge the transport authorities to operate bus service immediately. On information, the police and other officials rushed to the spot and persuaded the agitating passengers to with draw their agitation. Normalcy was restored after two hours. Traffic inspector, Sankaranarayan, removed a bus stationed on the middle of the road near the Anna bus stand. Higher officials were holding discussions with leaders of various trade unions to find out an early solution.
