Punjab Governor moots quick reaction teams

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S. F. Rodrigues on Monday asked senior Chandigarh Administration and Chandigarh Police to set up quick reaction teams in case of any untoward incident besides paying special attention to intelligence wing and control room operational network.

Presiding over a high-level meeting here, Gen. Rodrigues called for effective coordination between the intelligence and action groups of the security wings of the police to respond to situations without any loss of time and effort.

He said if anything happens, a complete cordoning of the area and traffic management must be done at once to make the area totally free of the people not required for any operational activity.

Noting with concern the laxity in security at vulnerable points, he asked the Union Territory’s Home Secretary and Inspector-General of Police to coordinate with important institutions and managements of the public-dealing organisations to put in place fool-proof security arrangements with no compromise at any level. He said there should be no ad hoc/casual approach and a monitoring system should be evolved to take corrective measures in case of any bottlenecks.

Gen. Rodrigues said liaison with the local army units and neighbouring States should be “institutionalised” to meet the immediate need of crisis situations. “The police forces must be equipped with the latest gadgets, sophisticated armament and protective equipment to combat the anti-national elements and the fire brigade should be equipped suitably to help the security forces in case of need,” he added.

He also asked them to strengthen their partnership and participative endeavour with the people.
