THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI) in the Lok Sabha and AITUC general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta has demanded a comprehensive probe into the “Intelligence failure that resulted in the terrorist attack in Mumbai.” Mr. Dasgupta, who is in Kerala to inaugurate the five-day 39th national conference of the AITUC beginning here on Tuesday, told a news conference on Monday that a probe was necessary to fix responsibility for the Intelligence failure and to ensure that there was greater security for people’s lives. Terming the resignation of Shivraj Patil as Home Minister a mere ‘mockery,’ Mr. Dasgupta said what happened in Mumbai was not the result of one individual’s failure, but of the whole system of Intelligence gathering and administration. It was the result of colossal failure on the part of the Centre and Maharashtra governments and Mr. Patil’s resignation was not sufficient to instil confidence in the minds of the people, he added. Mr. Dasgupta said there should be a coordinated initiative by the governments of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh to tackle the menace of terrorism in South Asia. There should be a concerted effort by all concerned to ensure that the Mumbai incidents are not used for communal mobilisation of any kind, he said. The 39th conference of the AITUC would chalk out programmes to resist any such move besides working out strategies to counter the onslaught on the working class. The AITUC general secretary said around 3,200 delegateswould attend the conference.
