“AIADMK wholeheartedly welcomes quota for Arundathiyars”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa has clarified that she is not against separate reservation for Arundathiyars and had only criticised Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s attempt to make electoral gains by making the announcement.

“The AIADMK wholeheartedly welcomes the reservation. But, the Chief Minister has made the announcement in view of the elections to the Lok Sabha. People should not fall prey to his designs,” she said in a statement.

Ms. Jayalalithaa asked why Mr. Karunanidhi, whose DMK was part of the government at the Centre in the last ten years, failed to raise the issue of separate reservation for Arundathiyars.

“When I was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu between 2001 and 2006, an alliance led by the BJP and later by the Congress was in power at the Centre. They would not have listened to me,” she reasoned.

“Whether it is the BJP regime or Sonia Gandhi, they will oblige Mr. Karunanidhi. My question is why the Chief Minister has announced separate reservation when the Central government is left with only three months,” she asked.
