HYDERABAD: Both Houses of the State Legislature paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister V. P. Singh, who passed away last week, by recalling the “value-based politics he had advocated and practised” and his fight for secularism and social justice. The Assembly as well as the Council adopted separate motions condoling his death and members observed a silence for two minutes as a mark of respect to the departed leader. Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who tabled the motion in the Assembly, said Mr. Singh was honest to the core and had left his stamp wherever he worked. Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu recalled Mr Singh’s strong ties with the Telugu Desam that paved the way for the formation of the National Front with NTR as chairman. He would be remembered for his courage in resigning from the Union Cabinet on the Bofors issue. E. Rajender (TRS), N. Narsimhaiah (CPI-M), Ch. Venkat Reddy (CPI) and D. M. Varaprasad (Congress) spoke on the motion. In the Upper House, members of all parties paid glowing tributes to the former Prime Minister after Finance Minister K. Rosaiah introduced the condolence resolution. Leader of Opposition Dadi Veerabhadhra Rao (TDP) said V. P. Singh tried to curb corruption in high places while Puvvada Nageswara Rao (CPI) and Ch. Sitaramaiah (CPI-M) said the former Prime Minister had never compromised with his values to remain in power. D. Rami Reddy (PDF), P. V. Ranga Rao (Congress), J. Prabhakar Rao (Ind) and others recalled Singh’s contribution for the uplift of minorities and the weaker sections.
