Police taking precautionary measures in tribal areas

Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM: The OSD (operations) Shahnawaz Khasim said on Monday the police department was taking all steps to ensure functioning of the public institutions in the forest villages where the Maoists were making a vain bid to float sanghams. Talking to The Hindu he said the people had been resisting the floating of such panels as well as the curbs imposed on their movement in the tribal pockets.

He said the democratic institutions were functioning for the benefit of the tribal communities. Any attempt to scuttle the process would amount to doing injustice to them. The Maoists were trying to make use of the tribal communities to fight a proxy war. They were forced to act against their will, which in fact amounted to depriving them of the human rights, he said.

He said the police had stepped up presence all along the inter-State border with Chhattisgarh in view of the PLGA formation week being celebrated by the Maoists from Tuesday.

He said the people were turning against the Maoists dalams because of the killing of innocent people in the tribal villages by branding as police informants.

Meanwhile, the CPI (Maoist) Venkatapuram area committee secretary, Sukhdev said tribals were being lured with money to counter the party activities in the region. In a statement issued at Charla on Monday he justified the acts of the party in punishing those working against the Maoists.

The party would not spare any one acting as police informer.

He said the CPI (M) had been encouraging and supporting the police informers in the area in a bid to thwart the growth of the CPI(Maoist ). So was the case with other parties too.

He said the tribals were getting their due including lands because of the fight of the Maoists.

He appealed to the youths to join the PLGA and make its formation week celebration a success.
