Tiruvannamalai: As many as 850 houses were damaged by the incessant rain in Tiruvannamalai and the total loss was estimated at Rs.6 crore, Food Minister E.V. Velu said on Monday. He was distributing relief to people at Cheyyar, whose houses were damaged in the rains. He said that each of the victim would receive Rs. 2,000 in cash and 10 kg rice. “Distribution of relief is under way in other parts of the district too,” he said. Around 14,000 silk weavers in the district could not go to work during the rain. The district administration would ask the State government for flood relief to compensate other losses including crop damage, Mr. Velu said. He handed over relief to 57 victims from Cheyyar taluk and 49 from Vandavasi. Collector M. Rajendran, DRO G. Thamarai, RDO-Cheyyar G. Murugan, tasildars M. Manoharan (Cheyyar), Karunamurthy (Vandavasi), MLAs K. Vishnuprasad and Jayaraman were present. The Minister later visited an irrigation tank at Dusi Mamandur. Farmers complained that owing to silt deposits in the inlet, the tank was not getting filled even during the rains. Mr. Velu asked PWD officials to prepare an estimate to desilt the canal which carries water to the tank from the Cheyyar, and forward it to the government through the Collector. “Water level in tank is now 20 feet against a full height of 30 feet. The tank irrigates 4,118 acres of land,” he told reporters. In separate events organised on Monday, the Collector distributed relief to the rain-affected persons of Arni, Polur and Tiruvannamalai taluks.
