GUNTUR: The three-day all-India junior major ranking tournament will begin here on January 3 at the Brahmananda Reddy stadium and the NTR municipal stadium. More than 1,000 shuttlers from 25 States were expected to compete in the qualifying matches under various singles and doubles events. Badminton Association of India (BAI) Joint Secretary Punnaiah Chowdary told reporters here on Monday that that all the top shuttlers up-to under-19 segment would take part in the tournament. The winners would become members of the Indian team competing in the European circuit and the total prize money of the tournament would be Rs.2 lakh. After the initial round of qualifying matches, the main draw would be held on January 6, 7 and 8, he said. The Guntur Badminton Association would be hosting it. The BAI has nominated R. Suresh Kumar as the chief referee and the Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association had nominated 40 qualified coaches to officiate matches.
