For a cause: Members of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Physically Handicapped Associations staging a protest in Chennai. CHENNAI: Members of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Physically Handicapped Associations organised a peaceful protest here on Saturday condemning the Sri Lankan war as well as terrorist activities in all parts of the world, including the spate of attacks in Mumbai. The Federation had held similar protests in other districts of Tamil Nadu recently, including Sivagangai, Madurai and Tuticorin. Over 100 members gathered outside the memorial hall opposite Government General Hospital carrying placards and raised anti-war slogans. Addressing the protesters, Federation State General Secretary P. Simmachandran said that wars not only cause loss of life and property but also disable victims. “There are many innocent people around the world who are affected by conflicts. More than loss of life, the worst consequence is disability due to war as the victim has to struggle throughout his life.” The two-hour protest also witnessed the participation of several physically challenged persons from other districts of the State. Mr. Simmachandran said that the event would have witnessed a higher turnout if it weren’t for the rain. On World Disability Day, which falls on December 3, the Federation of Tamil Nadu Physically Handicapped Associations, along with other social groups, has planned a peace rally in Chennai from the Munroe Statue to the Chepauk Guest House, he added.
