Promises support in the war against terror
Parties must evolve consensus on combating terrorism
H.D. Deve Gowda BANGALORE: The former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) president, H.D. Deve Gowda, has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing serious concern over the increasing incidence of terrorism in the country and the resultant feeling of insecurity among the people. In his letter, Mr. Gowda expressed his inability to attend the all-party meeting called by the Prime Minister. “I am unable to attend the meeting due to my poor health and I am deputing the Janata Dal (Secular) Parliamentary party leader M.P. Veerendra Kumar, MP, to attend this important meeting on my behalf.” ImplicationsMr. Gowda said, “Through this letter, I would like to express my serious concern over the increasing incidence of terrorism in the country which has resulted in growing insecurity among our citizens. Such incidents are also bound to have implications on our crucial tourism sector, foreign investment and above all the nation’s image as a strong democracy where the rule of law prevails”. He said, “It is equally important to send out a loud and clear message that terrorists have no religion and such attacks should not be allowed to damage our secular fabric in any manner whatsoever. On behalf of the Janata Dal (Secular), let me assure your good self of our unstinted support and cooperation in the war against terrorism.” Mr. Gowda said, “We should resolve unanimously not to politicise terrorism with a view to deriving political mileage. While there is a clamour for tougher anti-terror laws, the Government should ensure that the basic human rights of any citizen are not violated and no section of society is targeted.” AppealHe also appealed to all political parties to come together and evolve consensus on combating this scourge. Such a message of unity and unanimity would not only boost the morale of a nation, repeatedly shaken by terrorist actions but also send out to the enemies and the world at large a strong message of India’s national will and determination to take the challenge head on.
