Global meet on NREGS from today

VISAKHAPATNAM: The execution of works through gram panchayats is of critical importance in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). If institutions entrusted with the implementation of NREGS are not accountable and if the identification of works is not participatory, malpractices and irregularities will permeate the programme and put the credibility of the institutions and the effectiveness of the scheme at stake.

A 2-day global conference on “Citizenship, participation and accountability in NREGS,” organised by the Department of Social Work of AU on Monday and Tuesday, will examine the inter-relationships between participation, citizenship and accountability, said HoD and Conference Director B. Devi Prasad. It is held under the UGC Assistance for Strengthening of Infrastructure for Humanities and Social Sciences programme in collaboration with Laya, a local NGO and (PRIA), New Delhi.
