Vijay Kumar, a 1975-batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has been chosen to head the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Andhra Pradesh. He will take charge as the Director of the NPA at Shivarampalli in Hyderabad on Monday. Presently Director-General of Police (Training), Mr. Vijay Kumar goes with a rich experience spanning over 33 years in carrying out Central and State government assignments. In October 2004, he led the Special Task Force (STF) that gunned down brigand Veerappan and his associates, who posed a challenge to the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka police. Earlier, he was part of the Special Protection Group (SPG) team that provided security cover to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. For about two years, he was Commissioner of Police, Chennai City, and later took charge as Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order). Mr. Vijay Kumar also had a stint as Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Border Security Force, and Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Special Security Group (SSG) here. Jungle warfare“I will try to incorporate jungle warfare and urban tactics at the induction-level training programme. The observations made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the DGPs’ conference in New Delhi on counter-terrorism measures will be kept in mind while making changes in the training module at the NPA,” Mr. Vijay Kumar said.
