MUMBAI: Even though the markets are experiencing a slowdown due to global financial crisis, Harrison Malayalam Ltd (HML) is on experimentation to expand its operations by involving small farmers to raise its produces, rubber and tea, in the markets. Small growers“We are forming relationship with small growers taking their produce and utilising their produce along with ours to increase our plant capacity utilisation and deliver higher tonnage to the market. Through this relationship, we are also imparting our scientific knowledge to small growers to help them maximise their yield,” said A. S. Chouhan, President and CEO (Speciality Sector), RPG Enterprises, which owns Harrison Malayalam. According to him, there is a win-win situation for everyone and this is the first time that the company tried this experimentation to increase production. ProcurementHML has modernised all its rubber and tea factories this year. It also strategised procurement of green leaf and rubber latex from the neighbouring small farmers to maximise capacity utilisation. Till last year, the company was not procuring tea green leaf and latex from outside and was concentrating on its own production. Now with 70 per cent capacity utilisation at its plants, the company plans to expand production as the demand for the company’s products are steady, though the prices have come down. Further, HML has embarked on a re-plantation programme for rubber and tea and “we are looking to spend Rs. 55 crore over the next four years.”
