CHENNAI: A website of the diabetes department of the Voluntary Health Services (VHS) was launched at a function organised here as part of World Diabetes Day on Saturday. The website, launched by the patron of VHS Shriprakash Goel, has an interactive marriage counselling bureau for young insulin dependent diabetic patients. It is meant to disseminate information on diabetes. Describing the interactive marriage counselling bureau as a unique feature of the website, Head of the Diabetes Department C.V.Krishnaswami said: “I am hoping this will help diabetic patients find their life partner without much problem.” Dr.Krishnaswami said that there had been cases where young diabetic persons had problems in finding a life partner. He added that there were several such persons who were happily married now and had children without diabetes. Speaking on the occasion, Dr.Goel, who is the Chairman of Greenways Shipping Pvt. Ltd., advised young people to exercise and eat in moderation to prevent occurrence of diabetes. The VHS Diabetes Department provides free insulin to juvenile diabetes patients. Doctors at the department said in India the incidence of Type-1 diabetes is much less that in other western countries. However, as per the medical literature provided by VHS to press persons at the function, lack of access to insulin is an important reason for diabetes death. So, the services provided by VHS have helped control deaths occurring from the disease. The department currently supports 500 children suffering from diabetes.
