Strutting its stuff: A participant at the All Breeds Championship Dog Show in Bangalore on Saturday.

Bangalore: The stage was set for the beauty contest. The participants were well groomed from head to paw, their poise somewhat marred by some heavy panting.

The Bangalore Canine Club’s two-day dog show kicked off on Saturday. The show — All Breeds Championship Dog Show — is set to witness participation by over 400 dogs of 35 different breeds.

Breeds

Some of the breeds participating in the show include Maltese, Bull Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Siberian Husky, Pug, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Australian Silky Terrier, Saint Bernard, Basset Hound and Karnataka’s Mudhol hound.

N. Reguraj, president of the club, maintained that the event was highly structured. The club is expecting over 10,000 people to attend. “Many people these days import dogs as they come attached with an exotic tag. To encourage people to breed Indian breeds, we have introduced a special prize called ‘Best in Show-Bred in India’,” he said.

The show will be judged by Enrique Fillipini from Argentina and R. Nagendiran from India.

The show will witness a demonstration on grooming of dogs by Le Grand Kennels, followed by junior handling competitions, he added.

Manoj E.K., owner of Huskey, a 20-month-old Neapolitan Mastiff, was seen prepping his dog for the show. “I got him last November. I wanted this particular breed, as they are heavily wrinkled and unique. This is the first time I am participating in any dog show,” he said.

R. Prasanna Kumar had come to the show with six of his 10 dogs. He had brought his Labrador, Pug, English Mastiff, Rottweiler, and two Saint Bernards.

“This is the fifth time that my dogs are in a show. My Saint Bernard, Rimmi, has earlier been adjudged as a champion dog. I hope to take away a few prizes this year,” he said.
